I get this question a lot: “where does the name Hanning come from?” It’s a good question, and to be perfectly honest, we kind of took it….. but only from the Family!
John Hanning Speke, our MD Toby Speke’s great great uncle, was the explorer and first European to find the source of the river Nile. We just extracted his middle name.
I know, I couldn’t believe Jeremy Clarkson didn’t actually find the source on Top Gear either. But credit where credit is due, finding it wasn’t exactly easy. Clarkson drove there. Speke travelled over two-thousand miles by foot and donkey, went temporarily blind from disease, deaf from an errant beetle, found the source, returned to England after two years in Africa, and published a book detailing his exploits. Only for the critics to refute his findings. So he went back and did it all over again.
Going that extra mile, or two-thousand, defines our company ethos. After all it is an adventure starting your own company. On a logistical level alone, the planning, the professionalism, the detail orientation required for Hanning to stage such ambitious expeditions is something we at Hanning Recruitment can appreciate. And whilst we don’t claim to be explorers, our values aren’t just something we preach, but put into practice, empowering people who actually are. It is why we are so proud to sponsor Lucy Bulkeley’s summit attempt of Mt. Everest, and why we are so committed to helping others push their boundaries – just as John Hanning Speke once did.
